Ο Υπουργός Εθνικής Άμυνας κ. Πάνος Παναγιωτόπουλος παρευρέθηκε σήμερα στην επιμνημόσυνη δέηση στη μνήμη των Πεσόντων της Ναυτικής μας Αεροπορίας και ιδιαίτερα των Πεσόντων Αξιωματικών στα Ίμια την 31η Ιανουαρίου 1996, Υποπλοιάρχου Παναγιώτη Βλαχάκου ΠΝ, Υποπλοιάρχου Χριστόδουλου Καραθανάση ΠΝ και Αρχικελευστή Εκτορα Γιαλοψού ΠΝ, η οποία τελέστηκε στη Διοίκηση Ελικοπτέρων Ναυτικού (Κοτρώνι-Μαραθώνας).

Εν αναμονή του «φαινομένου του Κέσλερ»

Το πρόβλημα της υπερπλήρωσης του διαστημικού χώρου από κάθε λογής απόβλητα βρίσκεται και πάλι στο επίκεντρο της προσοχής. Αφορμή γι'αυτό αποτέλεσαν οι κυριακάτικες δοκιμές αντιπυραυλικών συστημάτων από την Κίνα και τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.

Αυτές οι δοκιμές συνήθως αφήνουν πολλά θραύσματα. Πολλοί εμπειρογνώμονες λένε ότι οικονομικά αποτελεσματικοί τρόποι για την εκκαθάριση του περίγειου χώρου ως σήμερα δεν υπάρχουν.

Οι αντιπυραυλικές δοκιμές αποτελούν μόνο ένα από τις πηγές διαστημικών σκουπιδιών. Αυξάνεται ο αριθμός των διαστημικών εκτοξεύσεων: η λύση πολλών προβλημάτων της οικονομίας, της άμυνας ή της επικοινωνίας είναι αδιανόητη χωρίς τους δορυφόρους. Μετά από ορισμένο βαθμό φθοράς, οι δορυφόροι παραμένουν σε τροχιά, όπως και τα τμήματα των πυραύλων.

Τρίτη εκτόξευση πυραύλου από τη Νότια Κορέα

Οι πολίτες στη Νότια Κορέα παρακολούθησαν πριν από λίγο ζωντανά την εκτόξευση πυραύλου με στόχο την αποστολή δορυφόρου στο διάστημα. Λίγα λεπτά αργότερα, αξιωματούχοι στη Νότια Κορέα ανακοίνωσαν πως η τρίτη απόπειρα της χώρας να εκτοξεύσει πύραυλο στέφθηκε με επιτυχία. 
Η επιχείρηση έρχεται ως απάντηση στην πρόσφατη πυραυλική δοκιμή της Βορείου Κορέας. Ο πύραυλος Naro, εκτοξεύτηκε από το Γκογιούνγκ, στο νότιο τμήμα της χώρας, απογειώθηκε με επιτυχία και ο δορυφόρος μπήκε σε τροχιά, σύμφωνα με τη Σεούλ. Ο δορυφόρος θα συγκεντρώνει κλιματικές πληροφορίες και αναμένεται ότι θα έχει επαφή με τη βάση αύριο Πέμπτη.

Κραυγαλέο λάθος, μεγάλο έγκλημα

Το εξοργιστικό παράδοξο με το «λαθάκι» του ΔΝΤ για την Ελλάδα είναι ότι ουδείς ασχολήθηκε. Από τη χορεία των ιθυνόντων, ημετέρων και ξένων, ουδείς προβληματίστηκε, κανένας δεν βγήκε να ψελλίσει μια αυτοκριτική κουβέντα. Σαν να μην έγινε τίποτε! Λες και το τεχνοκρατικό «λαθάκι», ομολογημένο από την επίσημη έκθεση του ΔΝΤ, δεν αφορούσε ένα κομβικό σημείο του Προγράμματος για την Ελλάδα (λιτότητα, ύφεση), αλλά τα ρέστα στην αγορά μιας σοκολάτας από το περίπτερο.

Iran responds to EU oil and gas sanctions with… oil and gas sanctions

Iran has slapped a ban on oil and gas exports to the European Union, even though the EU has already forbidden Iranian petrochemicals from entering its territory.
“Despite many requests by EU countries on buying oil and gas from Iran, Iran will not sell any oil and gas to those countries,” Oil Ministry Spokseman Alireza Nikzad Rahbar told the official Mehr news agency.
It is not clear what “requests” Nikzad Rahbar was referring to, as the EU stopped importing crude oil in July last year, and gas under the latest round of sanctions that came into force earlier this month.
It comes as fresh restrictions are being  implemented  by the EU, preventing Iranian banks from dealing with Europe, unless for humanitarian purposes. The embargoes are aimed at hindering Tehrans nuclear program, which Brussels believes is aimed at developing a nuclear weapon.

Any attack on Syria will be taken as an attack on Iran - Tehran aide

Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser on international affairs to the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamanei, warned Saturday that any attack on Syria will be taken as an attack on Iran or its allies, according to the Reuters news agency.

Tehran has already made strongly-worded warnings against an overthrow of al-Assad, who’s engaged in a large-scale armed struggle against the opposition forces that are doing their utmost to come to power.

The conflict in Syria has been raging since March 2011.

Sanctions mean declaration of war: Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)

PYONGYANG, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) vowed Friday to take "strong physical countermeasures" if South Korea is directly involved in the UN sanctions, which would be seen as "a declaration of war" against Pyongyang.
"We declare complete nullification of the Joint Declaration on Denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula adopted in 1992 and its total invalidity," the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said in a statement.
As long as the South Korea persistently pursues a hostile policy, the DPRK will never negotiate with anyone, it said.

Syrian rebels burn and plunder religious sites – Human Rights Watch

Syrian rebels have looted and burned minority religious sites in Northern Syria, US-based Human Rights Watch says. The attacks highlight the increasingly sectarian nature of the conflict as the bloodshed continues unabated.
The three incidents took place in November and December of last year in religiously mixed areas.
Rebels looted two Christian churches in separate villages in the relatively peaceful western governorate of Latakia, local witnesses told the rights watchdog.
They also destroyed a Shiite ‘husseiniya’ – a religious site devoted to Hussein, a martyr in Shiite tradition – in Idlib governorate.
In all three cases, Human Rights Watch found evidence showing the attacks on the religious sites were directly connected to the areas coming under the control of the armed rebels.

NASA tests laser communications by sending Mona Lisa to space

A new experiment by NASA proving the effectiveness of laser communications has raised the prospect that beam technology could one day replace radio. That’s after NASA scientists successfully beamed an image of the Mona Lisa to the moon.
­NASA scientists usually use lasers to track the position of its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) – the robotic spacecraft that creates gravitational maps of the moon. It collects the information then transmits it back to earth at a rate of 50 Mbs.
Then NASA scientists had the bright idea of reversing the flow by beaming an image of the Mona Lisa to the LRO using lasers.

Τουλάχιστον τρεις είναι οι νεκροί μεταξύ των 41 ομήρων, αλγερινών και ξένων πολιτών που κρατούνται από το μεσημέρι, υποστηρίζουν οι ένοπλοι ισλαμιστές που επιτέθηκαν σε διυλιστήριο φυσικού αερίου στη νοτιοανατολική Αλγερία. Οι ισλαμιστές επιτέθηκαν και κατέλαβαν το διυλιστήριο της BP, και κρατούν ομήρους τους εργαζόμενους, ζητώντας τον τερματισμό της γαλλικής στρατιωτικής επέμβασης στο βόρειο Μάλι. 
Οι αντάρτες υποστηρίζουν ότι κρατούν 41 ομήρους, ανάμεσά τους επτά αμερικανούς, γάλλους, βρετανούς, νορβηγούς και ιάπωνες. Ο ακριβής αριθμός και η εθνικότητα των ομήρων παραμένουν αδιευκρίνιστοι. Το κρατικό πρακτορείο της Αλγερίας κάνει λόγο για λίγο περισσότερους από 20 ομήρους.  
Τα υπουργεία Εξωτερικών των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών, της Βρετανίας και της Νορβηγίας έχουν γνωστοποιήσει πως ανάμεσα στους αιχμαλώτους βρίσκονται υπήκοοι των κρατών τους. Η Νορβηγία αναφέρει πως 13 πολίτες της χώρας εμπλέκονται στην υπόθεση ομηρίας ενώ ιαπωνική εταιρεία που συνεργάζεται με το διυλιστήριο αναφέρει πως Ιάπωνες εργαζόμενοι στο διυλιστήριο έχουν επίσης απαχθεί.

China plans to map Diaoyu Islands

China plans to survey the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea as part of a program to map its territorial islands and reefs.
The news is according to a document issued at a press conference held by the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation. The program is part of the country’s efforts to safeguard its maritime rights and interests.
The first stage of the island surveying and mapping project was launched in 2009. China has already finished mapping islands located within 100 kilometers of its coastline. The second stage will cover islands including the Diaoyu Islands.

Comme tout Cubain, la vendeuse de cacahuètes de la rue Respublica à Camaguey n'a qu'un mot à la bouche: «Voyager.» Cette mulâtresse qui rêve d'ailleurs apostrophe un client. «Désormais, avec un passeport cubain, tu vas pouvoir voyager partout dans le monde», insiste-t-elle. «Et le visa?», questionne son vis-à-vis. «Un simple papier. Un détail», répond-elle.
Les Cubains vibrent pour une nouvelle révolution, celle du voyage. Elle a été annoncée en octobre par le Granma, l'organe officiel du Parti communiste cubain. Avec un titre: «Cuba actualise sa politique migratoire».

Auch aus Somalia wurden Drohungen gegen Frankreich ausgestoßen. Dort hatten Soldaten versucht, eine französische Geisel zu befreien. Der seit mehr als drei Jahren von Islamisten festgehaltene französische Agent Denis Allex wurde bei dem Rettungsversuch wahrscheinlich getötet. Zudem kam ein Soldat ums Leben, ein weiterer wird vermisst. Die somalischen Shebab-Rebellen drohten Frankreich mit "bitteren Konsequenzen".

La pérdida de Taftanaz es un duro golpe para Bashar Asad según EEUU

La pérdida de la base aérea de Taftanaz, en el norte de Siria, supone un golpe duro al régimen de Bashar Asad, declaró hoy la portavoz del Departamento de Estado de EEUU, Victoria Nuland.
“Entendemos que la oposición armada lanzó una ofensiva de bastante envergadura en Taftanaz, la principal base aérea en el norte (de Siria), en Idlib. La pérdida de esta base sería, desde luego, un golpe considerable a la capacidad del régimen de Asad de reabastecer a sus fuerzas en el norte”, señaló Nuland en rueda de prensa.
Aunque los combates allí continúan, agregó, es una demostración de la creciente fuerza de la oposición armada que trata de priorizar actualmente los ataques al potencial aéreo del régimen, dado que los bombardeos desde el aire resultan especialmente mortíferos para civiles.

Journalists targeted in Greece bombings

Homemade bombs have exploded at the homes of five journalists from major media outlets in Athens. Police are linking the attacks to the current economic crisis in the country and the way the mainstream media have reported it.
The devices, made of gas canisters, exploded outside residences in different areas of Athens. The explosions caused minor damage to the buildings’ entrances, but no one was injured.

President Assad outlines political solution to Syrian conflict

 Syria’s president has outlined a plan to end the country's conflict, starting with a halt to international support to “al Qaeda-linked terrorist groups.” The solution proposes a new constitution and government, as well as national reconciliation.
President Bashar Assad said that his government had never refused a political solution, but would not negotiate with terrorists. He then stressed that the only solution was a Syrian proposal to end the crisis.
“The political solution entails regional and international powers halting their support for armed groups, which will be followed by a halt in our security forces' crackdown against them,” Assad said in his first public address to the people of Syria since June.

Chinese protest Aso's visit to cemetery

Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso has visited the Japanese War Cemetery in Yangon during a three-day visit to Myanmar.
Friday’s visit raised protests from some Chinese war veterans living in the country, who were in Myanmar fighting the Japanese invaders during the Second World War.
Aso’s visit lasted only 15 minutes because of the protest. Chinese veterans accused Aso of trying to cover up Japanese crimes during the war and attempting to portray its aggression as reasonable.

A redundant political class in Ireland

Politics is dead in the Irish Republic. The Irish parliament, the Dail, is now little more than a rubber stamp for the Troika, the generic name for the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Union, the three powers to which the country is in hock.
Things are bad. Ireland’s debt to GDP ratio is set to reach 122 percent in 2013, above the 120 percent threshold the IMF considers unsustainable. The total debt of the country, according to an Irish Times report, is €192 billion, four times what it was in 2007, with a projected need to borrow a further €34 billion before 2015.

Ariel Sharon, siete años en coma cada vez más en el olvido

El ex primer ministro israelí Ariel Sharon cumple este jueves su séptimo año en coma cada vez más en el olvido y con el que fuera su principal enemigo en el Likud, Benjamín Netanyahu, a punto de revalidar la jefatura de Gobierno en las elecciones del próximo día 22.
Hoy hace siete años del día en que Sharon, que tiene ahora 84 años, sufrió una hemorragia cerebral que le mantiene postrado en el hospital Tel Hashomer, cerca de Tel Aviv, y que ha ido perdiendo progresivamente la atención de los medios y la población.

Russian Navy to hold biggest war games in decades

The four major Russian Navy fleets will hold a joint exercise in late January in the Mediterranean and Black seas. It will be the biggest such event in decades.
­Commands for the Northern, Baltic, Black Sea and Pacific fleets have been preparing for the exercises since December of last year, the Russian Defense Ministry has announced. Warships detached for the event are currently sailing to those regions.
