The five permanent UN Security Council members have agreed on a draft resolution endorsing the Syrian peace process, diplomats said Friday.
The draft resolution calls for the Syria peace talks to commence in early January.
The draft text, obtained by AFP news agerncy, asks the United Nations to bring the Syrian government and the opposition to the table for formal negotiations on a political transition to end Syria's nearly five-year war.
A council meeting is scheduled for 4 pm (2100 GMT) to vote on the measure that will give formal UN approval to efforts to reach a ceasefire and launch political talks in Syria.

In his end of the year address, Obama said that there would be no peace in Syria without a legitimate government, reiterating the need for Assad to leave power.
"I think that Assad is going to have to leave in order for the country to stop the blood, for all the parties involved to be able to move forward in a nonsectarian way," Obama said, adding, "He has lost legitimacy in the eyes of the country."
