Proclaiming a "great national effort to rebuild our country and restore its promise for all of our people," he said: "together we will determine the course of America and of the world for many, many years to come."
He said that his inauguration marked not just a transfer of power between individuals and political parties, but a return of power to the people of the United States.
For years, Trump said, the politicians "prospered, but the jobs left and the factories closed."
While political leaders in Washington celebrated their successes, there was "little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land," the new president said.
"January 20, 2017 will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again," Trump said minutes after Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office.
"The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer," the 70-year-old New Yorker said.
He promised to rebuild US infrastructure and said that those efforts would be governed by "two simple rules: buy American and hire American."
