SEOUL, South Korea — The North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called for an end to the "confrontation" with rival South Korea on Tuesday in what appeared to be an overture to the incoming South Korean president as she was cobbling together South Korea’s new policy on the North. 

North Korea on Tuesday issued a major policy statement on New Year’s Day, following a tradition set by Mr. Kim’s late grandfather, the North Korean founder Kim Il-sung, and his late father, Kim Jong-il, who died in December last year, bequeathing the dynastic rule to Mr. Kim.

Greeks, Romanians, Cut Christmas Spending

Greek retailers registered the lowest Christmas sales for the past 10 years, down by 40% from 2011, according to preliminary estimations.
According to reports of the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), Christmas sales of clothes and footwear fell by 50% from 2011, sales of electric appliances decerased by 40%, and sales of cosmetics and books declined by 30%.
Even sales of food products prior to the 2012 Christmas holidays dropped by 20% as compared to 2011.

Bulgaria Top Cop Blocks Road to Main Winter Resort Bansko

Bulgarian Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov participated Sunday in a protest that blocked the entrance to Bulgaria's top winter resort, Bansko.
Tsvetanov expressed support for Bansko residents, who for a thrid day in a row have come out to request an expansion of ski facilities in the resort.
The action of Bulgaria's top cop and Vice-PM is a culmination of a string of high-ranking visits to the protests, which saw Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva and vice minister for tourism Ivo Marinov also showing up.
"I am convinced that in a very short time, protesters' demands will be satisfied. Their requests will be heard at the very first cabinet sitting in 2013," stated Tsvetanov.
8,000 Bansko residents, organized by mayor Georgi Ikonomov, have submitted to Bulgaria's President Rosen Plevneliev a petition requesting for expansion of facilities in the resort.

Evo Morales expropia cuatro filiales de Iberdrola en Bolivia

El presidente boliviano, Evo Morales, ha decretado este sábado la expropiación de las acciones de la española Iberdrola en dos distribuidoras de energía eléctrica en las regiones de La Paz y Oruro, una empresa de servicios y una gestora de inversiones.
"Nos hemos visto obligados a tomar esta medida para que las tarifas de servicio eléctrico sean equitativas en el departamento de La Paz y Oruro y la calidad de servicio eléctrico sea uniforme en el área rural y urbana", ha afirmado Morales.
Iberdrola, a través de su filial Iberbolivia, posee el 89,5% de las acciones en la Empresa de Electricidad de La Paz (Electropaz) y el 92,8% en la Empresa de Luz y Fuerza de Oruro (Elfeo).

China "not fear troubles" regarding Diaoyu Islands (Senkaku/Diaoyu issue)

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun said Friday that China will neither create nor fear any troubles concerning the Diaoyu Islands.
He made the remarks in response to a question concerning China-Japan relations at the eighth Lanting Forum.
Zhang said the Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islets are inherent parts of China's territory, and Chinese government and its people's determination to safeguard the country's territorial sovereignty is firm.
"We hope for a stable and peaceful surrounding environment, we will not create troubles, but we definitely not fear any trouble," Zhang said.

8 U.S. sailors sue Japanese gov't, TEPCO for lying about radiation

SAN DIEGO —

Eight crew members of the USS Ronald Reagan are suing the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) for lying to them about the radiation levels to which they were exposed during rescue operations near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant last year.
In a suit filed in San Diego this week, lead plaintiff Lindsay R Cooper accused TEPCO of intentionally concealing the dangerous levels of radiation in the environment from U.S. Navy rescue crews working as part of “Operation Tomodachi” off the coast of the Tohoku region following the devastating series of earthquakes and tsunami that resulted in the nuclear disaster of March 11, 2011.

Insgesamt seien für den Bankensektor 40,5 Milliarden erforderlich, heißt es in einem Bericht der Zentralbank. Die Nationalbank, Griechenlands größtes Kreditinstitut, braucht demnach 9,75 Milliarden Euro, und die Alpha Bank, das zweitgrößte griechische Geldhaus, 4,57 Milliarden Euro. Auf die Eurobank, Griechenlands drittgrößtes Kreditinstitut, entfallen 5,83 Milliarden Euro und auf die Bank von Piräus 7,33 Milliarden Euro.

US Navy sailors sue Japan for lying about Fukushima radiation

American sailors have filed a lawsuit against the Japanese government for allegedly lying about the health risks they faced while assisting in rescue efforts after last year’s Fukushima nuclear disaster.
Crewmembers from the USS Ronald Reagan filed a lawsuit in Federal Court in San Diego, California this week in an attempt to hold Japan accountable for any long-term damage they’ll caused during “Operation Tomadachi,” the spring 2011 relief effort that sent sailors near the coast of Japan to assist in the days after an earthquake and subsequent tsunami ravaged the island nation and caused a level 7 meltdown at three reactors in the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.

Les vestiges d'un temple vieux de 2.750 ans découverts à Jérusalem

Les vestiges d'un temple datant du 9 ou du 10 siècle avant J.-C. ont été découverts dans l'ouest de Jérusalem, faisant la lumière sur les pratiques religieuses de la Judée d'alors, a annoncé mercredi le site Times of Israel, citant un communiqué de la Direction israélienne des antiquités.

Le temple découvert lors des fouilles archéologiques effectuées dans le quartier de Tel Motza fut bâti il y a 2.750 ans.

"L'édifice de culte de Tel Motza est une découverte surprenante et inattendue, car il n'existe pratiquement pas de lieux de culte datant de la période du Royaume de Juda", lit-on dans le communiqué.

Κατέβηκα πεζός την Ερμού, μέχρι την Ασωμάτων έβλεπα συνέχεια κλειστά ή άδεια μαγαζιά. Στον Κεραμεικό μικροπωλητές χωρίς πελάτες, εστιατόρια της πάλαι ποτέ διαλαμψάσης τουριστικής εποχής περίμεναν μάταια πελατεία. Αυτή δεν ήταν η Αθήνα, ήταν μία τριτοκοσμική πόλη. Όταν γύρισα τα Βαλκάνια ανάμεσα σε δύο πολέμους, το 1997, οι πόλεις τους, αν και πάμπτωχες, δεν ήταν σε τέτοια κατάσταση.

Moskau misstraut Meldungen über Einsatz von Kampfgas in Syrien

Russland hat keine Hinweise auf einen Chemiewaffeneinsatz durch die syrische Armee und misstraut den gegenteiligen Informationen der in London ansässigen Syrischen Überwachungsstelle für Menschenrechte (OSDH).

Am Montag hatte OSDH bekannt gegeben, dass die syrische Armee im Raum der Oppositionshochburg Homs unbekanntes Kampfgas gegen die Rebbellen eingesetzt habe.
